A Modified Methodology for Modeling Tri-Axial Braided Composites with Through Thickness Integration Points

Abstract

In this paper, the concept of through thickness integration points in the available shell element of LSDYNA, as well as considering fiber tow size and direction, are used to realize the complex fiber tow undulation in braided composites. A previous model will be modified and further developed to simulate the braided carbon reinforced epoxy composite materials. The work scope will include the following specifically defined tasks: Develop a unit cell model of a 0/60/–60 tri-axial braid with quasi-isotropic architecture; predict basic composite material mechanical property; perform test and analysis correlation; enhance the micromechanical model after the test and analysis correlation.
