Abstract
Aiming at traffic patterns on freeways, an Automated Traffic Pattern Identification (ATPI) algorithm is proposed based on GPS, GIS and GPRS (3GS) technologies which include in-vehicle module and centralized module corresponding to the different information transformation modes of event-response feedback and real-time feedback respectively. The former can be used to detect accidents related to Floating Car (FC), and the latter can be used to detect all kinds of congestions where FCs passing through. The simulation tests indicate that the proposed algorithm can be used to identify the position, types and phases of congestions, the head and the end of the queues as well as the accidents not inducing congestion under lower volume.
