Profit Optimization for Container Carriers
Publication: International Conference on Transportation Engineering 2007
Abstract
The Container Liner Shipping Industry is currently facing a series of financial difficulties created by the general stagnation in market growth and the dramatic increase in capacity in both number of ships and containers made available in the market. I believe that the key to success in the new e-business environment and overall improved efficiency comes with improved forecasting techniques, logistics resource optimization and greater revenue selectivity. The key to maximizing profits is the integrated management of the individual voyage and the overall container fleet movements. My experience in Container Fleet Optimisation has shown overall cost reductions of up to 30% in equipment and repositioning costs. The application of Revenue Management and Contribution Management in other industries has shown overall revenue improvements of 5 to 15%. Both concepts can add significantly to the overall profitability of container carriers.
