Abstract
This paper focused on the mechanism of dynamic instability for the subgrade of highways in river environment. Based on analyzing the structures of the riverside subgrade, its failure features, and the factors affecting its stability, the mechanism of dynamic instability for riverside subgrade was investigated. The river water infiltrating the subgrade may reduce the interaction among soil and/or rock particles, increase their freedom and activity, and speed up the process which make the subgrade crusher and looser. The instability of the riverside subgrade is not accidental, but an evolutional process induced by many factors.
