Chuanjiu Highway Reconstruction and Landscape Design

Chuanjiu Highway, from Chuanzhusi to Jiuzhaigou, is the main route from all corners of China and the only way from Jiuhuang Airport to Jiuzhaigou Scenic area, which has been approved as a man-and-biosphere reserve in the world and listed into the world Nature Heritage Catalog. The original Chuanjiu Highway with low technical standards and poor landscape quality was greatly out of harmony with the beautiful Jiuzhaigou Scenic area. In terms of the principle "maximal protection in design, minimal destruction in construction and maximal rehabilitation in green guard", Chuanjiu Highway has presented an entirely new appearance of safety, comfort, beauty and harmony since the reconstruction in September of 2003. Based on the new value and rich experiences of Chuanjiu Highway reconstruction, methods of highway ecological environment protection and roadside landscape design are analyzed from the aspects of alignment adjustment, shoulder drainage and side slope guard disposal and traffic engineering landscape design respectively in-this paper. And the relationships of highway construction with ecological environment rehabilitation and sustainable development are also discussed, which plays an instructional role in the design and construction of other ecological and scenic highways in West China.
