Physiographic Implications of Stream Stability at Bridges

Publication: Managing Watersheds for Human and Natural Impacts: Engineering, Ecological, and Economic Challenges

Abstract

At bridges, channel instabilities can cause undermining of the bridge foundations due to channel bed degradation, undermining and outflanking of bridge abutments and piles in the floodplain due to channel widening, and undermining of abutments and onset of local scour as the channel nears an abutment or floodplain pilings due to lateral migration. Thus, attention to channel conditions in the vicinity of bridges is an important aspect of bridge maintenance. Attention to the physical characteristics of bridge crossings in the various physiographic regions can lead to sustainable solutions to stabilizing channels at bridge-stream intersections.
