Abstract
Some results are presented of satellite measurements of water circulation and chlorophyll concentration in several seas and lakes: Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Iowa Lake and Carter Lake (USA), Lake Kinneret (Israel) and Lake Issyk-Kul (Kyrgyzstan). Reflectance spectra of productive waters were measured in the range of 400 to 900 nm and analyzed to identify regions of the electromagnetic spectrum related to specific algal pigments. We explored the possibility of remote detection and quantification of chlorophyll-a and chlorophyll-b, relationship between chlorophyll concentrations and the commercial catch of fish (using Black Sea as an example). One of the objectives of this study was to review some aspects of relationship between water circulation and turbulence structure, and spatial distribution of algae and suspended sediments (using Lake Kinneret and Lake Issyk-Kul as examples).
