Soil Model Selection in Earth-Based Extreme Region with Peat Foundation under Large Loading Area

Publication: Engineering, Construction, and Operations in Challenging Environments: Earth and Space 2004

Abstract

Large areas of the artic landscape consist of tundra with deep deposits of highly compressible organic soil (peat), which makes construction of roads and structures very challenging and expensive. To design engineering works founded on peat, engineers must find mathematical models, used with measured soil parameters, which will represent how the peat will behave under loading. This article presents the results of plate loading tests conducted on a site with thick deposits of peat in the region of Belarus and compares the test results with two mathematical models in an effort to determine which model best predicts behavior of peat soil.
