The Comparison of Two Local Area Traffic Management Schemes for Accident Reductions
Publication: Traffic And Transportation Studies (2002)
Abstract
Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) has been used for dealing with safety problem on residential streets for many years. With the question raised by some researchers for how many benefits could be brought from these LATM schemes, this paper depicts the impacts of the LATM schemes on the safety based on accident rates resulting from two case studies in metropolitan Adelaide, South Australia. A comparison of the evaluations of safety benefits between the two schemes is conducted. The analysis results showed that the effect of the schemes is limited in the road networks regarding to safety, especially in the external network, however they did bring benefits of reducing speed. The scheme, which is area-wide is more likely to bring safety benefits to the area, and influencing the internal network traffic operation.
