The Use of GIS in the Development of Water Quality Models
Publication: Building Partnerships
Abstract
In today's environmental engineering practice, many computer models have been developed which explain physical and chemical processes in lakes, streams, and estuaries. These computer models rely heavily upon data for the development of model parameters as well as for the calibration and validation of model results. In the past, the working connection between data and the model, both of which exhibit spatial variability, has been relatively weak. The utilization of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has improved data analysis, model development, and presentation of model results by strengthening the link between data and water quality models. This paper outlines the following: 1) The process implemented in importing the data and model information into GIS. 2) The methods of data analysis exercised to study the environmental problem, 3) the development of various model inputs, and 4) the discussion of comparison between model output and actual data. This environmental modeling effort has benefited from the use of GIS for data analysis and model development, as well as presentation of model results for model calibration and projections. Not only has it saved considerable time and effort in the development of the model input, it has also assisted in the clear and efficient presentation of results to clients. The success of GIS in the project presents a strong argument for its use as a universal tool in future water quality modeling and management efforts.
