Lag Times for Urban and Developing Watersheds in Kansas

Publication: Building Partnerships

Abstract

Lag time is an essential input to most flood hydrograph models. Lag times for sixteen urban and developing watersheds in the Kansas City area were determined from gaging data. Relevant physical characteristics of the streams and watersheds were computed from digital spatial data with GIS. Multiple-regression analyses were performed to identify significant explanatory variables and to develop regression equations for lag time. Two regression equations are recommended. Lag time appears to decrease exponentially with increasing road density and impervious area.
