Plastic Tripping of Ring Stiffeners

Publication: Journal of Structural Engineering
Volume 119, Issue 5

Abstract

A simple analytical model is developed that describes the plastic‐tripping behavior of a curved cylindrical panel with ring stiffeners. The failure modes of the ring stiffeners with adjacent plating under two types of loading applications, inward and outward bending at the end of the stiffeners, are studied. Energy methods are used to analyze the plastic‐tripping response of the structure. The entire load‐deformation characteristics are determined by combining both the elastic, fully plastic and softening tripping paths. The differences in the structure response to the inward and the outward bending as well as the effects of geometry on the bending resistance are discussed.
