Foundations for Units 1 and 2 of the first large steam power plant in Indonesia consist of concrete rafts supported on slender, end‐bearing steelcased concrete piles. Soil investigation established the presence of layers and/or lenses of locally loose silty fine sands at various depths. It was necessary to density these materials to ensure that unacceptable differential settlement did not occur between separate shallow foundations and to reduce the potential for liquefaction of the looser zones in the event of seismic disturbance. A design peak horizontal ground acceleration of 0.3 g was calculated and compaction piles used to improve the soil under structures. The principle of compaction piling is to forcefully compact loose soil by introducing significant quantities of additional granular fill throughout the soil mass. This method introduces a far greater quantity of fill material into the soil mass than the sand piling method, which it superficially resembles.

An analysis to predict the critical pullout load, the breakout load, and load‐deformation characteristics of anchors using hyperbolic stress‐strain curves of soils as the constitutive law is proposed. The analysis incorporates the effect of the shape of the anchor. Strip, square, and circular anchors are analyzed. Analytical data are compared with the available experimental results, which show good agreement.

This paper discusses a method of the coring, storing, sample preparation, laboratory testing of oil sand, and field load testing of piles bearing on the oil sand. Laboratory strength and compressibility test results on undisturbed and gas expanded oil sand samples are also presented. Details of field pile load tests are described and end‐bearing pile capacities calculated on the basis of laboratory determined soil parameters, and field‐measured standard penetration blow counts are then compared with values interpreted from pile load tests. Field load tests and laboratory consolidation data indicate that oil sand behaves as a dense material with low compressibility.

The potential settlement of rockfill has been related to the gradation of the rockfill materials being utilized. No data has been published, however, which present criteria to differentiate the characteristics of rockfill of different gradations. Field data presented in this paper indicates that a transition is present from rockfill with most large particles in point-to-point contact to rockfill with most large particles encased in finer material at approximately 20 to 30 percent of the rockfill material passing the #4 sieve.
