Special Collection on Engine and Power Plant Combustion Technologies for Sustainability

Sustainability has evolved as major societal priority and power generation and transportation are widely viewed as important areas of concern in this regard. A major thrust that has developed as a response to such concerns is a strong investment on renewable energy. However, the fact remains that at least in the short to medium term, power generation will remain to a substantial degree dependent on combustion of fossil fuels. In the developing world, large and rapidly emerging populations live over huge reservoirs of cheap fuel (mainly coal) that will not go unexploited. In the field of transportation, low-temperature combustion technologies (such as HCCI or RCCI) demonstrate potential for drastic emission reduction. As a contribution to this vivid ongoing discourse, this special issue of the Journal of Energy Engineering discusses technologies that relate to the efficient and environmentally sustainable use of combustion of fossil fuels for contemporary power generation.
