Recent developments have once again underlined the need to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of energy systems and the vivid public awareness for air pollution that has increased dramatically, requiring drastic measures for a cleaner environment. Therefore, this Special Collection selects high-quality papers that address important issues related to the analysis, and improvement of the design and operation of the various energy systems. The contributions are focussing on fundamental and applied research in the areas of thermodynamics, heat transfer, combustion and fuels, thermo-economic analysis, controls, and expert energy systems. These refer to applications to power plants, various chemical processes, internal combustion engines, cogeneration, district heating, low polluting devices, etc, including energy systems using renewable energy resources. All papers published in this Collection have undergone standard rigorous peer review and, coming from four different continents, they offer a genuinely global perspective on the contemporary issues of combustion-based power generation.
