The International Symposium on Systematic Approaches to Environmental Sustainability in Transportation was held on August 2-5, 2015, at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. A variety of topics on environmental challenges and recent development and advances associated with design, construction, and maintenance of transportation infrastructure under extreme conditions such as those in cold or higher latitude climates or rural environments were discussed at this symposium, from which invited papers were collected for this special collection.
