This Special Collection on ‘Verification and Validation in Physical, Social, and Economic Community Resilience Modeling’ focuses on the topic of Community Resilience -- the ability to prepare for and adapt to changing conditions and withstand and recover rapidly from disruptions, an issue of growing national importance with the mounting losses in recent disasters. Recent advances in this field have resulted in a proliferation of models to understand the effects of hazards on natural and physical infrastructure, social and economic systems, and the interdependencies between infrastructure and the systems that comprise society. This Special Collection underscores the importance of effectively translating these research advances in a manner that builds trust in these models and their underlying data, while promoting an understanding of their inherent accuracy, precision, and uncertainties. The papers in this collection consolidate historical advances and present new knowledge surrounding verification and validation of these models and their underlying data, guiding future research efforts towards standardizing practices for characterizing, quantifying, and communicating uncertainties so that communities will better understand and trust the knowledge generated by researchers.
