To serve our readers better, the Journal of Transportation Engineering, Part A: Systems (JTE Part A) creates this Safety Special collection to attract scholarly research papers that would bridge the gap between research and safety practice. We believe that there is a disconnect between safety research and the state-of-the-practice, and while safety research has flourished, road safety in the US in not heading in the right direction. We hope that this would be a first attempt followed by many others to bring the focus of scholars and practitioners on the urgent needs of society to substantially reduce severe injuries of all road users.
