Call for Papers: Special Collection on Emerging Technologies and Methodologies in Multimodal Transportation

Guest Editors:
Zhiyuan Liu, Ph.D., Southeast University, Nanjing, China

Aims & Scope

Multimodal transportation, which involves the seamless integration of various modes of transportation such as road, rail, air, and sea, plays a pivotal role in fostering economic development, enhancing efficiency, and mitigating environmental impacts. By combining different transportation modes, it creates a more interconnected and resilient system that can adapt to diverse logistical challenges. Multimodal transportation improves supply chain efficiency, reduces transportation costs, and enhances overall accessibility, making it easier for goods and people to move across regions and countries. Additionally, it promotes sustainability by optimizing routes and minimizing the environmental footprint associated with transportation. This integrated approach not only enhances connectivity but also boosts economic growth by facilitating trade, promoting investments, and creating a more competitive and responsive transportation infrastructure. In an increasingly globalized world, where the movement of goods and people is paramount, the importance of multimodal transportation cannot be overstated in achieving a harmonious, efficient, and sustainable global transport network.

To advance the academic discourse in this area, we seek to provide a unique opportunity for researchers and practitioners from universities and industries to share knowledge and exchange ideas on the state-of-the-art research in multimodal transportation. We welcome papers covering new work at the intersection of data science, mathematical optimization, traffic simulation, and network modeling for complex multimodal transportation systems. The contributions of the submissions to this Special Collection may consist of purely data-driven, machine learning-based approaches, as well as hybrid research with conventional methods. The submissions of novel approaches to incorporate non-conventional concepts, methodologies, applications, and technologies are especially encouraged.

The topics of this Special Collection are related to the state-of-the-art technologies and methodologies for modeling, computing, simulating, and optimizing multimodal transportation systems. The proposed topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Multimodal Transportation Planning, Operations, and Management
  • Transportation Network Modeling and Optimization
  • Big Data Analytics in Transportation
  • Advanced Computing Techniques in Transportation
  • Traffic Simulation and Control
  • Connected and Automated Vehicles

Submission Deadlines

Submission deadline: December 31, 2024

Submission Guidelines

We invite researchers and practitioners in related fields to submit short Forum articles, Technical Notes to present research in progress, full Technical Papers and Case Studies. Article type descriptions (including length limits) and preparation guidelines can be found in “Publishing in ASCE Journals: A Guide for Authors”. Authors should follow the guidelines for ASCE journal submission and submit manuscripts electronically through the JTE Part A’s Editorial Manager.

When submitting, authors should indicate in the submission questions that the paper is being submitted in response to this Call for Papers (JTE Multimodal Transportation) and the Special Guest Editor’s name.

Please note that this is an invitation to submit papers for peer review and does not imply acceptance for publication. Acceptance of submitted papers depends on the results of the normal refereed peer review process of the journal. We will make every effort for a rapid review process.

All accepted papers submitted through this solicitation will be published in regular issues of the journal as they are accepted, and they will be added to a special online collection (which is similar to a print version of a special issue) and will be indexed for citations like other regular journal papers.
