While sewerage systems are anticipated to expand over the next decades, it remains cost-prohibitive to connect many rural and suburban areas to centralized treatment facilities. Major benefits of onsite and decentralized wastewater systems include greater opportunities for groundwater recharge and recovery of water, energy and nutrients close to their source of generation. However, benefits of onsite and decentralized systems must be balanced against risks to public health and water quality. An understanding of the impacts of climate change on these systems is needed to plan for greater infrastructure resilience. This special collection provides a selection of studies addressing global, environmental and water resource issues associated with onsite and decentralized wastewater management. Additional papers for this special collection will be added as they are accepted and published online. Readers are encouraged to check the online collection page frequently to find additional content.
