In response to the rapid pace of urbanisation, the demand for new buildings and the negative impact of the building industry on the environment, there is an urgent need for development and application of new materials as well as innovative structural systems. Among others, structural components or systems that take advantage of the combination of two or more materials in composite or hybrid forms have emerged as viable solutions, for developing reliable, robust, adaptable, and easy to erect structures which have lower negative environmental footprint compared to the conventional construction methods. This special collection contains twelve papers that deal with development and assessment of the structural behaviour of composite (or hybrid) structural systems subjected to a range of static, cyclic and dynamic gravity, and lateral loads. We hope this collection encourages new lines of research and innovation towards more sustainable and adaptable structures.
