While our built environment is facing aggravated challenges from all fronts, including extreme events, climate change, and human activities, adaptive and autonomous systems have emerged as a viable and promising solution to these challenges. They revolutionize the methods of design, construction, and operation of our structure and infrastructure systems through the advancement in material sciences, robotics, big data, and artificial intelligence. This special collection is focused on the recent research developments in these areas. Through this special collection, we aim to capture the latest development of adaptive and autonomous systems in structural engineering, showcase their impacts on the new design and operation of our built environment, and set the agenda for future research.
