Traditional municipal wastewater treatment consumes less energy than can be theoretically extracted from the carbon within the wastewater. The water and nutrients are also valuable resources that can be recovered for beneficial reuse. Recovering these resources is of increased interest to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reuse scarce resources. However, recovering resources from wastewater requires careful analyses to avoid unintended consequences such as increasing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions beyond that released by traditional wastewater treatment methods.
