Due to the impacts of global warming, the energy sector is transitioning itself to one that is green and sustainable. Given the continuous increase of global energy demand and the many uncertainties of energy supply ahead, subsurface energy will continue to play a crucial role during this transitional process.
To address global warming challenges, one should pay special attention not only to the stability and availability of subsurface energy, but also to the development of transformational technologies for subsurface energy systems that will contribute to oil and gas development, geothermal energy extraction, carbon dioxide geo-sequestration, underground hydrogen storage, etc.
This Special Issue will primarily cover the papers in subsurface energy extraction (e.g., oil and gas, geothermal energy) and subsurface geological storage, while highlighting theoretical, technological, and practical development and improvement in the literature of these areas.
