Natural gas is one of the mainstays of global energy, powering the industry and households. Compared with other fossil fuels, natural gas is a clean energy resource with less carbon emits and air pollutants. It is a perfect partner for renewable energies such as wind and solar, providing them with stable and reliable back-up power regardless of the seasonal fluctuations. Thus, natural gas is so-called “transition fuel”, as the bridge from traditional energy sources to renewable energy. Despite scientific and technological advances in natural gas engineering, uncertainties and knowledge gaps still exist, such as geological and reservoir modelling, multiphase and multiphysics flow modelling, and evaluation of possible environmental issues. Therefore, this Special Collection selects high-quality papers with both practical and theoretical contributions to the literature. All papers published in this Collection have undergone standard rigorous peer review. This Special Collection highlights technological developments, future opportunities, and current status in natural gas science and engineering.
