The purpose of the present Special Collection is to evaluate the Boussinesq-type non-hydrostatic approximation and its relevance in hydraulic engineering. Important examples of non-hydrostatic flow conditions in open channels include the flow over a spillway and below a sluice gate; the dam break wave at initiation of motion and while propagating on a steep terrain; the run-up of an impulse wave over an obstacle; tidal bores propagating in a river from an estuary; the flow in steep mountain torrents with boulders and rocks; the erosional flow over river bed forms such as dunes or anti-dunes; and sudden gate movements in a canal. The papers belonging to this collection offer a modern and innovative view of the non-hydrostatic modeling approach.
