Aims & Scope

This special collection focuses on the damage mechanisms, diagnosis methods, and repair technologies for various engineering facilities built in permafrost regions. Under global warming, also with the increasing human activities and infrastructure construction in permafrost areas, geotechnical engineering damages caused by permafrost degradation have become increasingly severe, which poses great threats to the safety and serviceability of infrastructures in permafrost regions.

This collection invites original research and review articles addressing the latest countermeasures against embankment settlement, pile foundation failure, pipeline instability, and other engineering damages related to permafrost changes. Both field monitoring studies and numerical simulations are welcome. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Damage evaluation and prediction of infrastructures over permafrost
  • Innovative diagnosis technologies for engineering damages
  • Soil improvement and reinforcement techniques
  • Cooling and thermal stabilization methods
  • Optimized infrastructure design integrated with climate change adaptation
  • Case studies of engineering damage treatment in cold regions

Submissions from various engineering disciplines will be considered, including civil, environmental, mechanical, pipeline, and geological engineering. This collection provides a platform for scholars and practitioners to exchange ideas and experiences in mitigating the risks of engineering diseases in permafrost areas.
