Introducing the ASCE Journals’ Early Career Editorial Board

Publication: Journal of Hydrologic Engineering
Volume 25, Issue 1
Through this editorial, we wish to inform the readers of the journal about a new initiative that would be of interest to those members of the hydrologic community who are contemplating serving on journal editorial boards. The ASCE Journal of Hydrologic Engineering is serving as one of the pilots for this initiative from ASCE.

Introduction

ASCE’s Early Career Editorial Board (ECEB) program is intended to provide a pathway for early career individuals interested in pursuing an editorial leadership position with ASCE Journals. The ECEB program gives members an opportunity to participate on an editorial board under the mentorship of a current associate editor, section editor, or editor in chief.

Qualifications

The ideal ECEB members are within 1–3 years of having earned their Ph.D. Participants in the ECEB program should have expertise in hydrology, should be familiar with the peer review process, and have some experience writing reviews. Potential candidates are required to be members of ASCE or an ASCE Institute, to have at least six publications within the last 5 years, which may include their Ph.D. dissertation, and they should have published at least one journal paper in the ASCE Journal of Hydrologic Engineering. At the end of their term with the ECEB, participants will have familiarity with selecting reviewers, recommending editorial decisions, and promoting a journal.

Specific Responsibilities

Typical ECEB member responsibilities would include:
1.
Provide reviews for at least three submissions to the Journal annually.
2.
At the request of and in consultation with a mentor associate editor, identify potential reviewers for submissions.
3.
Act as social media ambassador for the Journal or a section of the Journal. Promote highlighted content such as Editor’s Choice papers, ASCE SmartBrief articles selected from the journal, award-winning papers, special collections, conference collections, top-downloaded papers, etc.
4.
Attend editorial board meetings and take minutes.
5.
At the discretion of the editor, assist with the coordination of special collections.

Term

ECEB members will serve a 2-year term with possibility of renewal for a second term.

Application and Selection

The aim is to have between three to six ECEB members on the editorial board at any given time.
Interested candidates should submit an application that includes name, affiliation, summary of qualifications, areas of expertise, and list of publications. The entire application should be a single pdf file and sent by email to the editor in chief ([email protected]) and Carmen Turner ([email protected]). Preference will be given to candidates with a good journal publication record, experience in journal paper review, and active involvement in the ASCE-EWRI activities.
The application deadline is December 31, 2019. All applications will be reviewed by an ad hoc committee from the editorial board. Applicants will be informed about a decision within 6 weeks after the deadline.
Once selected, ECEB members will be listed on the journal masthead and in the editorial board membership of the journal at https://ascelibrary.org/page/jhyeff/editorialboard.
We seek your help in bringing this opportunity to the attention of potential applicants.
