Special Collection Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering and Its Predecessors: A Collection of Terzaghi Lectures with Lasting Contributions to the Profession

In 2016, the Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering (1997–Present) and its predecessors—Journal of Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division (1956–1973), Journal of Geotechnical Engineering Division (1974–1982), and Journal of Geotechnical Engineering (1983–1996)—celebrated 60 years of publication by ASCE within the realm of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering. To commemorate this grand occasion, we have assembled 22 Terzaghi lectures into an online special collection. The first effort of collecting published Terzaghi lectures into one volume was spearheaded in 1983 by our dear colleagues Bill Marcuson and John Christian. Eight Terzaghi lecture papers, covering the period of 1974–1982, were assembled and presented as Geotechnical Special Publication No. 1. The collection assembled herein, and entitled “Special Collection Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering and it Predecessors: A Collection of Terzaghi Lectures with Lasting Contributions to the Profession,” includes 22 papers related to lectures covering the period of 1983–2010. Several Terzaghi lecturers have chosen not to submit a written paper for publication; therefore, there is a discrepancy in the number of years versus the number of papers in the collection. I believe the diversity of the paper topics, by the highly esteemed authors who delivered Terzaghi lectures, renders this online collection as unique in scope and value. I hope you will find this special collection to be useful and enjoyable.
