Abstract

  • Prepared by the Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavement Standards Committee of the Standards Council of the Transportation and Development Institute (T&DI) of ASCE. Co-sponsored by the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute

Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavement, Standard ASCE/T&DI/ICPI 68-18, provides design, construction, and maintenance guidance for permeable interlocking concrete pavement (PICP) to achieve stormwater management goals while providing a structurally adequate pavement section to accommodate the anticipated vehicular loading in a cost-efficient manner.

This standard covers the following topics: Definition of common permeable pavement terms; structural design methods to accommodate incidental or frequent vehicular use; hydrologic design methods to accommodate water infiltration and flow within the pavement system; construction and inspection procedures; a guide to construction specifications; and permeable pavement maintenance procedures.

PICP may also help achieve compliance with many national, provincial, state, and local regulations, as well as transportation agency design requirements for the control of stormwater runoff. Nonregulatory drivers that influence PICP use include economics, which can make PICP a lower-cost alternative to conventional drainage and stormwater management systems, and project owner preferences for conformance to sustainable rating systems for roads and transportation infrastructure.

ASCE 68-18 will be of interest to civil engineers, design professionals, and public stormwater and transportation agencies by establishing design standards for permeable interlocking concrete pavements.
