Verification and Validation of 3D Free-Surface Flow Models

Abstract

  • Sponsored by the Task Committee on 3D Free-Surface Flow Models Verification and Validation of the Environmental and Water Resources Institute of ASCE.

This report describes in detail a new rigorous and systematic verification and validation process for computational models for simulating free surface flows. The new procedures address a situation, developing over the past several years, whereby computational models are hastily developed and delivered to clients without the proper scientific confirmation and certification.

Topics include: terminology and basic methodology; analytical solutions for mathematical verification; mathematical verification using prescribed or manufactured solutions; physical process validation; application site validation; the systematic model verification and validation procedure; systems analysis considerations, findings, and conclusions; and recommendations.

The appendixes contain input data for test cases and formulations and codes for manufactured solutions.

This report will be indispensable for students and practitioners working on computational models and environmental engineering, as well as professionals involved in construction and design, legislation, and land planning and management decisions.
