Chimney and Stack Inspection Guidelines

Abstract

  • Prepared by the Task Committee on Chimney and Stack Examination and Retrofit of the Energy Division of ASCE.

This report provides guidelines for the inspection of chimneys and stacks that can assist owners to determine what level of inspection is appropriate for a particular chimney. The guidelines also establish common criteria for inspections so that all parties clearly understand the scope of the inspection and the required end product. Each chimney or stack is a unique structure, subject to aggressive operating and natural environments and to degradation over time. Such degradation may be managed via a prudent inspection program followed by maintenance work on any equipment or structure determined to be in need of attention. Sample inspection report specifications, sample field inspection data forms, and an example of a developed plan for a concrete chimney are included.

This book provides a valuable guidance tool for chimney and stack inspections and also offers a set of references for these particular inspections.
