National Geotechnical Experimentation Sites

Abstract

  • This Geotechnical Special Publication contains 19 peer-reviewed papers describing research conducted at National Geotechnical Experimentation Sites (NGES), a network of permanent test sites in the United States for geotechnical research. The NGES and accompanying database provide easy access to well-characterized and documented field test sites with a wide range of geological conditions for the purpose of advancing the state of the art in areas such as in situ testing, instrumentation, prediction of soil behavior, and foundation prototype testing.

These papers present details on site characterization and experimentation performed at Treasure Island Naval Station, Texas A&M University, University of Houston, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Northwestern University, and Spring Villa Test Site. Other papers describe the NGES database, applications for education and research using the NGES facilities and database, and an outlook for the future of NGES.

GSP 93 will serve as a valuable reference for potential users of NGES and for others within the geo-professions interested in well-documented site-specific data.
