Methods of Achieving Improved Seismic Performance of Communications Systems

    This TCLEE Monograph provides information on seismic exposure, design, and installation practices that can improve the seismic performance of communication systems. The practices suggested in this report are derived from data collected from earthquake reconnaissance reports and cover both wired and wireless communications. The report reviews methods for determining seismic hazards in different parts of the country; describes central office facilities and equipment, outside plants, and wireless systems; identifies each of the major elements that make up the facilities; and, finally, reviews the earthquake performance of these elements and recommended practices.

    Topics include: evaluating earthquake hazards; building systems; outside transport; wireless networks and transmission towers; mobile telephone exchanges; design criteria for communications; and earthquake sources and effects.

    This report is directed to a broad audience of intra- and inter-exchange carriers, large corporations, utilities, municipal and state governments, and universities with private branch exchanges. It may serve as both a practical introduction to seismic engineering of communication systems and a checklist for facility managers to assess the earthquake readiness of an installation.
