History and Heritage of Coastal Engineering

Abstract

  • Selected papers from the 25th International Coastal Engineering Conference, held in Orlando, Florida, September 2–6, 1996.

This collection of 15 papers honors the individuals and institutions who contributed to the foundations of the coastal engineering discipline. Although coastal engineering is a relatively new discipline within civil engineering, coastal engineering works have been constructed for hundreds—thousands, even—of years for port development, coastal hazard protection, and reclamation of land from the sea. Different countries have different needs and devised different approaches. These papers, which document the evolution of society and its relation to coasts, are derived from the perspectives of 15 countries that have hosted the ICCE. Readers will be fascinated by the ingenuity and determination of our ancestors, as well as the accomplishments made in modern times. This volume is rich with information, colorful anecdotes, and citations to many almost-forgotten original references worthy of re-examination.
