Abstract
The application of multispectral photography and thermal line scanner imagery to the data collection procedure for highway environmental impact studies is evaluated. The photography and thermal imagery used was obtained from a pilot environmental impact study initiated by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and Communications in 1974. The study included a portion of Highway 402 between London, Ontario and Sarnia, Ontario. The multispectral photography and thermal imagery are compared to color and color infrared photography obtained in the same time frame. The prime criteria for the comparison was the ability of these two modes to detect, record, and enhance features not in evidence on the photography. The findings of this study support the concept that spectral and thermal signatures are required to assist in the interpretation of multispectral photography and thermal imagery.
