Speedy and Economical Construction through Mechanization

Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 118, Issue 2

Abstract

The American construction industry has a challenging background—the notable edifices and large projects of antiquity, colonial clays, and the national expansion period. Earth moving, being a major factor, has advanced by leaps and bounds, with steam power and now with gasoline and diesel engines spelling out the steps. Crawler treads and rubber tires were only slightly lesser factors. World War II showed that the industry could meet the crisis and acquit itself with glory. All these accomplishments were largely based on efficient and dependable mechanical devices, products of native ingenuity. With such potentiality the future of American construction, despite new hazards, is assured.
