Abstract
Modern equipment has had a tremendous effect on the development of the excellent highway system now found in the United States. The influence of mechanization on highway building has been profound as indicated by tracing the evolution of various types of equipment. An important role has been played by professional and governmental groups in fostering better highways. Further improvements in economy are feasible, in such matters as designs and standards, equipment and materials, mechanization, and building program—sindeed, in all facets of a large integrated industry. Engineering and construction together can meet the challenge.
