Urban Commodity Flow—Suggested Research Projects

A symposium sponsored by the United States and Canadian Department of Transportation and conducted by the National Academy of Sciences through the Highway Research Board was convened to identify the more pressing areas for research. Terminal design location and operation, consolidated terminal development, problems connected with pick-up and delivery services, reduction of congestion, measuring social and environmental costs of urban goods movement, and evaluation of regulatory and legislative problems were marked as areas for particularly needed research. The basic aim of the research is to provide decision makers in industry and government with both nontransportation and transportation inputs upon which they can base decisions and determine courses of action in planning for and providing efficient facilities and services for moving goods in metropolitan areas.
