Esthetic Considerations in Urban General Planning
Publication: Journal of the Urban Planning and Development Division
Volume 98, Issue 1
Abstract
Esthetics is beauty, beauty is order, order is functionalism. These are principles that should guide urban general or comprehensive planning. Esthetics is necessary to fulfillment of life. Urban planning should include esthetics in formulations of land use plans, transportation systems, and public or community facilities plans. Housing in the land use plan should have special consideration as to the inspiring location and outlook in selecting residential areas. Transportation routes and terminals should be given more esthetic input as the transportation plan is consummated. The community facilities plan should especially include the esthetic quality of parks and open space. Elimination of the unesthetic by setting standards for esthetics are recommended to be programmed annually to reduce in preplanned percentages air, noise, and water pollution, solid waste, substandard housing and other blight through urban renewal, and, on the positive side, to enhance esthetics by adding to the city landscaping, underground electrical distribution, cultural facilities.
