Abstract
Inadequacies in property descriptions are illustrated by analyzing a specific case. Two forms are given—one a protraction and the other a true description. Both appear to define a single parcel of land. Each form is tested to determine whether it can be located on the ground, where its boundaries will lie, and how much uncertainty exists. Also, the importance of certainty of location over certainty of dimensions is pointed out. Actually, each of the two forms leads to quite different interpretations. One encourages uncertainty, expense, and confusion while the other has built-in safeguards.
