Abstract

Reliable predictions of stress and displacement in soil masses subjected to load are important in the design and construction of many civil engineering structures. Accurate predictions are dependent upon the engineer's ability to: (1) Idealize correctly subsoil conditions; (2) quantitize the stress-strain strength behavior of the in situ soil; and (3) formulate mathematical models for relating boundary loadings to soil deformations using material properties simulating the behavior of real soil.
