Abstract
Efforts were made to determine the factors which govern the kinetics of iron precipitation so that a more rational approach could be applied to the engineering design of reaction basics in iron removal plants. The rate of iron precipitation was measured in aerated Illinois ground waters having equilibrium pH values in the range of 7.5 to 7.8 and alkalinities in the range of 355 mg per 1 to 610 mg per 1 as CaCO3. The rate was found to vary widely. It was possible, however, to relate the rate of iron precipitation to the alkalinity and the hydroxyl ion concentration.
