Abstract

A selective and subjective interpretation is made of the influence of Hardy Cross on the rise of numerical methods. His unique status results as much from his personal traits as from his formal contributions to the theory and methodology of structural mechanics. Indeed, his contributions followed naturally from his insistence on simplicity of statement, from his habit of seeking interrelationships, and from his ability to ask questions which lead to answers.
