Abstract
The paper presents an approximate method for the evaluation of the fundamental critical load of a sidesway permitted multistory frame. The technique can be used with computer facilities, or manually making use of current design standard alinement charts. The relevance of this frame critical load to the design of individual columns within the frame is considered from the point of view of allowable pure axial stress and of moment magnification effects.
