Abstract
This paper decribes the details of finding stresses in a three-dimensional model of a hydroelectric powerhouse subjected to static generator load. In order to locate critical zones, the six components of Cartesian stresses were obtained at about 12,000 points. An attempt to explain the structural behavior of a power station under the load has been made. It has been shown that none of the two-dimensional theories prevalent for the design of power stations can explain the structural behavior of the powerhouse, which is essentially a three-dimensional structure. The results obtained will greatly simplify the problem of future investigators who may follow either numerical or experimental methods for the solution of the problem.
