A Critique of Engineering Education

Publication: Journal of Professional Practice
Volume 91, Issue 2

Abstract

Today's professional engineer is charged with the awesome task of digesting vast quantities of new technical material to solve the engineering problems of an advancing society. One of the responsibilities of engineering education is to spread this new material throughout The profession via the engineering graduates. This progressive and increasingly complex nature of engineering knowledge is antiquating the present 4-yr program. This concept, combined with the fact that the engineer must have a thorough liberal education in the humanities and the social sciences, makes present (1965) engineering education increasingly inadequate. However, the common problems of higher education must also be solved. The various professional engineering societies should demand updating revisions in engineering education and should closely monitor these changes to assure a uniform educational program.
