Abstract

The civil engineer of the future who desires to reach management level will have to obtain more formal and informal education and training in management and administrative procedures. In past years, civil engineers held most of the top management positions in engineering projects and public works organizations. There has been a change in which many of these positions have been assigned to persons with management and administrative backgrounds, who are not engineers. ASCE and other organizations have sponsored courses and seminars of varying lengths of time, and more of this training will be needed for those who aspire to management positions, rather than to specialization in strictly engineering work.
