Abstract
Beam elements with discontinuous variations in stiffness are encountered frequently in engineering practice. The deflection of such elements may be required either for their own sake, e.g., as approximations to mode shapes in the evaluation of critical frequencies using energy principles, or as an estimate of the buckled configuration of columns in the circulation of critical loads. In this note, a generalization of Macaulay.s method is given that enables the calculation of deflection of beams with piecewise continuous variation in stiffness to be accomplished by hand in a convenient manner.
