Abstract
The purpose of this note is to illustrate how an elastic pin-ended member of sandwich construction and of given material volume (mass) can be designed to have the maximum Euler buckling load under a specified constraint on the maximum elongation due to axial tension. The member is to serve as either a tie or a column during its design life. Such a situation is quite often met in practice, particularly in truss design. The corresponding dual problem of minimizing the volume (mass) of an elastic sandwich member under given constraints on its minimum Euler buckling load and maximum elongation as a tie has also been considered.
